This research paper critically examines the monumental ‘Urdu Lughat Tareekhi Usool Par’, a 22-volume historical dictionary compiled by the Urdu Dictionary Board. The study highlights the 52-year compilation process (1977–2010) that produced this extensive lexicon, which plays a vital role in documenting, understanding, and preserving the Urdu language. It explores the Board’s objectives, the methodology adopted for word selection based on historical principles, and the contributions of the key editors involved in its development. The paper also discusses the initial controversies and criticisms related to the quality, authenticity, and verification of entries. Despite these challenges, the study underscores the importance of this 264,000-entry dictionary as a remarkable national and linguistic achievement. It concludes by emphasizing the need for continuous revision and updating to ensure that the lexicon remains relevant and comparable to major international historical dictionaries.
