Abstract

In the tradition of Urdu poetic literature, Musaddas-e-Hali by Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali stands as a literary masterpiece and a symbol of intellectual and cultural awakening in the Indian subcontinent. Its widespread acclaim not only earned it recognition among scholarly circles but also attracted ideological and critical responses from various writers. Among the notable poetic replies was Musaddas-e-Awali, authored by Maulana Muhammad Farooq Chiryakoti. Written as a direct response to Hali’s Musaddas, Musaddas-e-Awali addresses Hali’s critiques of disciplines such as medicine, chemistry, physics, philosophy, and logic. In doing so, Chiryakoti offers his perspective on the Islamic Renaissance and delivers a sharp critique of Western education and civilization. The work reflects the ideological tensions of the time and makes a meaningful contribution to the discourse on tradition versus modernity within the context of Muslim society in colonial India.
